Politicised feelings: This reversal of often talked about emotionalised politics tries to make clear that feelings have a genuine political dimension, which consists in their collectivising effect. If one manages to democratise them, they can be decisive for social change. Disgust, fear, hatred, murderousness and defiance: a selection of unwanted and recalcitrant feelings that can generate discomfort and resistance and are often held responsible for many problems in the political sphere. But is it really the case that problems and discomfort are triggered by these feelings or are they not rather merely indicators of the external situation which - instead of banishing the feelings - should be changed? What would happen if they were no longer suppressed from the political sphere, but looked at and analysed? This is precisely where Paul*A Helfritzsch starts, in order to lead us into a principle that adequately counters the political situation of our time - being at the mercy of seemingly overpowering and unconquerable structures - the principle of defiance.

"From Hitler's notorious fondness for Wagner's operas to classical music's role in fuelling German chauvinism in the era of the world wars, many observers have pointed to a distinct relationship between German culture and reactionary politics. In Classical Music in Weimar Germany, Brendan Fay challenges this paradigm by reassessing the relationship between conservative musical culture and German politics. Drawing upon a range of archival sources, concert reviews and satirical cartoons, Fay maps the complex path of classical music culture from Weimar to Nazi Germany-a trajectory that was more crooked, uneven, or broken than straight. Through an examination of topics as varied as radio and race to nationalism, this book demonstrates the diversity of competing aesthetic, philosophical and political ideals held by German music critics that were a hallmark of Weimar Germany. Rather than seeing the cultural conservatism of this period as a natural prelude for the violence and destruction later unleashed by Nazism, this fascinating book sheds new light on traditional culture and its relationship to the rise of Nazism in 20th-century Germany."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

"Made in Yugoslavia: Studies in Popular Music serves as a comprehensive and thorough introduction to the history, sociology, and musicology of popular music in Yugoslavia and the post-Yugoslav region across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The book consists of essays by leading scholars, and covers the major figures, styles, and social contexts of music in the region that for most of the past century was known as Yugoslavia. Exploring the role played by music in Yugoslav art, culture, social movements, and discourses of statehood, this book offers a gateway into scholarly explanation of a key region in Eastern Europe. An introduction provides an overview and background on popular music in Yugoslavia, followed by chapters in four thematic sections: Zabavna-Pop; Rock, Punk, and New Wave; Narodna (Folk) and Neofolk Music; and The Politics of Popular Music Under Socialism"--
